Natural hazards and climate change adaptation in La Garrotxa.

Analysis of multi-hazard approaches applied to reducing territorial vulnerability in mountain areas.

-----

This project, which has a duration of two years (until May 2025), aims to analyze the multiple hazards associated with the effects of climate change affecting the La Garrotxa region, in order to help reduce the vulnerability of the territory.

Although the study or pilot area is La Garrotxa, it is expected that the developed methodology can be applicable to other mountainous and rural areas with similar risks.

The need for this project arises from the context of climate change, a global phenomenon that already significantly impacts us and will progressively increase its effects if necessary measures to mitigate and adapt to its impacts are not taken. Rural or mountainous areas are particularly susceptible to this reality and face threats such as wildfires, floods, torrential rains, drought, and erosion. Therefore, the approach to the problem will be from a multihazard perspective, due to the interactions that may occur between different adverse natural phenomena. Based on the assessment of hazard levels in the medium and long term, the aim is to produce a series of final products, in the form of maps and reports, that will complement proper territorial planning and an effective risk reduction program.

Planned actions

  • Collection of all events related to hazardous natural phenomena that have occurred over the past 100 years (including level of impact, damage, losses, recovery time, and actions taken), and the construction of a database using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to compile all obtained information.

  • Conducting statistical analyses and scenario modeling to forecast future events over 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 years.

  • Development of hazard maps and the study of exposure and impact for each considered hazard.

  • Analysis of the physical and structural vulnerability of the territory in relation to the studied hazards.

  • Creation of a “Risk Reduction and Management Plan” for the study area, which will include scientific and educational programs, monitoring, and tools for responsible management.

  • Training municipal technical staff and political representatives in the use of methodologies and decision-making, combined with citizen science workshops.

  • Implementing communication and outreach actions, while considering gender equality perspectives throughout the project.

CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

  • May 1, 2025: Presentation of the GarMultiRisk project database at the EGU25 congress, held at the Austria Center in Vienna. The talk was delivered by Iris Schneider Pérez during a session dedicated to multi-hazard risk assessment. The presentation showcased the first results of compiling natural hazard events in La Garrotxa over the past 123 years, with a total of 1,050 events identified. We draw a very positive balance from the experience and trust that the connections and ideas generated will help drive the GarMultiRisk project forward. More about the event can be found in this blog article

  • November 27, 2024: Attendance at the scientific conference MedGU 2024, where the GarMultiRisk project was presented in a 15-minute talk by Dr. Marta López Saavedra. The project received the Best Paper Award in the Earth and Environmental Sciences track of the congress. An extended abstract about the project was also submitted for publication in the conference proceedings journal, indexed in Scopus/SCImago. More about the event is available in this blog article.
