The 2024 edition of the Yearbook for the New Culture of the Territory is Now Available: The CST’s technical magazine features reflections and articles to share experiences toward building a more sustainable society.

This year’s edition is dedicated to natural hazards from various perspectives: management, nature-based solutions, communication, citizen participation, territorial planning, and photography and geological knowledge as tools to raise awareness about geological risks.

This theme was chosen because, since May 2023, CST has been leading the GarMultiRisk project, funded by the Fundación Biodiversidad and set to run for two years (until May 2025). The objective of this project is to assess multi-hazards (the interaction, frequency, and impact of different natural hazards) in the Garrotxa region. The aim is to build a scientific knowledge base about natural risks in the area to develop more resilient territorial planning, considering the context of climate change. The project involves collaboration with the scientific team of the Natural Risk Assessment and Management Service (NRAMS) at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC).

As a result, this year’s Yearbook articles were written by individuals involved in the GarMultiRisk project:

  • Dr. Joan Martí (NRAMS and IDAEA-CSIC)

  • Dr. Marta López Saavedra (NRAMS and IDAEA-CSIC)

  • Dr. Llorenç Planagumà (GeoNat and CST)

  • Mireia Jiménez (University of Girona and CST)

  • Arnau Lagresa (CST)

  • Iris Schneider (CST)

The introduction was written by Dr. Àlex Casademunt, president of CST, and the coordination was led by Mireia Jiménez. We would also like to extend special thanks to Karen Yen and Lorella Abbona for the design and layout, and to designer Laura Sanmartín for creating the GarMultiRisk logo, which also inspired the cover of the Yearbook.

In light of the catastrophic consequences of the DANA storms at the end of October in the Valencian Community, the reflections and proposals in this Yearbook are dedicated to the victims of this tragedy. We hope that more responsible and professional risk management can foster a culture of prevention, reducing the impacts of natural hazards in the future, and helping us adapt to these new climate change scenarios.

We hope you enjoy reading the Yearbook! Feel free to send any comments or reflections to centresostenibilitat@gmail.com.

We also take this opportunity to remind you about the First Art Market we are organizing on the weekend of November 23 and 24 at the Can Trona Culture and Nature Center (La Vall d’en Bas). This crowdfunding initiative involves selling artwork by local artists, with part of the proceeds going to support CST’s work. We encourage you to attend and share this event with us, whether to wander around, disconnect from screens, admire brushstrokes of paint, or perhaps fall in love with a piece of art and purchase it, contributing both to the artist’s work and CST’s mission.

Thank you for reading!

The 2024 Yearbook has been made possible thanks to the support of the Diputació de Girona.
