Less than a week ago, the Espai Cràter hosted a talk on the impact of mobility infrastructures on health. This event highlighted the findings of research conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), analyzing how different mobility alternatives in recent years have affected the Garrotxa region.
In a context where projects such as the Olot and Les Preses bypass, the tram-train connecting various points in the province, or the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan are being discussed, the need to study pollution levels in Olot has become increasingly evident.
According to the data presented, air quality in Olot exceeds the limits recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), as is the case in many other urban areas. ISGlobal researcher Enara Díez explained in an interview on the program 'En Profunditat' on Ràdio Olot: "What we have seen is that these levels can affect people, especially concerning cardiovascular diseases."
Díez also pointed out that the most affected area by pollution levels is Avinguda Sant Jordi. After analyzing the contaminant figures, the big question is whether this is a worrying situation. According to the researcher, it is essential to find solutions as soon as possible to protect public health.
The full interview with Enara Díez can be accessed on the Ràdio Olot website under the podcast section: radiolot.cat/podcasts.
The talk at Espai Cràter began with a welcome from Mireia (CST) and an introductory context provided by Ferran Campillo. Following this, Carolyn Daher (ISGlobal) presented for ten minutes on the relationship between health and urban public policies, while Enara Díez delved into the impact of mobility infrastructures on health for 20-30 minutes.
The subsequent debate, moderated by Llorenç, featured contributions from various representatives of the region and involved entities:
Duaita Prats (No és un vial)
Macarena Domínguez (Tram-train)
Esperança de SLV
Cesc Baquer (COAC)
Mireia Dosil (IEGreda)
Carlota Peracaula (AFA of IE Greda)
This discussion space has highlighted the importance of rethinking mobility in Garrotxa and its impact on people's health. The debate remains open and will be crucial in shaping the future of sustainable mobility in the region.
