Quera Group

Quera: Outreach, Education, and Conservation of Geological Heritage
-----
The Quera Group is a geoconservation group that began in 2018, driven by the interest of individuals connected to the CST in developing outreach, education, and conservation activities related to geological heritage.
The importance of preserving geological heritage is also included in Catalonia's Natural Heritage and Biodiversity Strategy. According to this strategy, by 2030, geodiversity and geological heritage should be also considered, such as other components of natural heritage, in terms of planning, management, and decision-making.

Among the main actions carried out by Quera are:

Seminars on Geological Heritage and Territorial Management in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees:
Since 2019, five editions have been held.
The most recent took place on October 28, 2024. The report is available here.
Inventories of Geological Heritage for the Conservation of Geodiversity:
These inventories are carried out in:
- Natural Park of the Ter – Freser Headwaters, since 2018, by geologist and shepherd Miquel Casas.
-
In the Alta Garrotxa Natural Interest Area. In this region, the Strategy for the Conservation of Geodiversity of the Protected Natural Area of Alta Garrotxa was drafted during 2021-2022 to comply with the Alta Garrotxa Protection Plan, which sets as one of its objectives the need to “Protect fragile and threatened habitats, species, and geological elements of community or greater natural interest (including paleontological sites).”
Geological Itineraries as a way to combine tourism with geology and to promote different geological points of interest:
The following materials have been developed:
-
Interpretative poster of the volcanic vents (La Garrotxa)
-
Coma de Vaca (Natural Park of the Ter-Freser headwaters)
> Interpretative poster of the region
> Geological itinerary (Distance: 2 km; Elevation gain: 35 m; Duration: 1h)
> Geological values from the Collet de la Gralla (Tregurà, Vilallonga de Ter) to Refugi de Coma de Vaca
> Geological values from the La Farga de Queralbs to Refugi de Coma de Vaca
-
Geological itinerary Coma de l’Embut (Natural Park of the Ter-Freser headwaters) (Elevation gain: 430 m; Duration: 2h)

Geological itinerary of the Estac volcanic caldera (Pallars Sobirà). (Distance: 4km; Duration: 2h). This is the most recent, inaugurated on December 16, 2023. The route is also available for download on Wikiloc.
