Can Poeti

Can Poeti-Molí d’en Simon is a small estate covering about 11 hectares, located on the banks of the Brugent River in the municipality of Les Planes d’Hostoles (La Garrotxa). The estate is part of the Municipal Property Inventory. Additionally, the Brugent River is classified as a Natural River Reserve and is included in the Nature 2000 Network and the Plan for Areas of Natural Interest in Catalonia (PEIN).

The main values identified in this area, according to their typology, are:

Cultural and historical values:
-
The Simon's mill
-
The channel and the dam
-
The turnery
Geological value:
-
The outcrop of a lava flow
Fauna and flora values:
-
The weir and the canal, which serve as a refuge for naiads (a protected species)
Hydrogeological values:
-
The Brugent river
-
The waterpond of Can Poeti
Social values (intangible goods):
-
The river space, as a space for enjoyment and well-being
-
Natural environment, as a space for learning and stewardship (responsibility, protection, and care)

The actions undertaken by the CST in this geographical area essentially fulfill two objectives:
-
Ecological improvement of the Brugent river
-
Social innovation in the care and conservation of river ecosystems
To achieve these goals, at the end of August 2023, the owners of Can Poeti and the CST, which has had a close collaboration for several years, signed a stewardship agreement for a period of 25 years, with the possibility of extension. This agreement commits the CST to undertake tasks related to advisory services, outreach, planning, management, and improvement in order to conserve biodiversity, natural and cultural heritage, and the landscape, in close collaboration with the owners of Can Poeti. The idea is also for other local social actors to eventually participate in this river stewardship and define responsibilities for each of them. Currently, collaboration has begun with environmental education activities for 5th and 6th-grade students from Les Planes School, with the goal that they may assume more river care tasks in the future.
Stewardship is thus understood as a new form of participation and governance for river management that regards nature as a subject with rights and a voice, overcoming the human-nature dichotomy. Additionally, it allows for a redefinition of the relationship between private property and the entity.
It should be noted that the CST is a member of the Network for Land Stewardship, and the data from this contract have been submitted to be included in the Network’s Stewardship Inventory for Nature Conservation.
Consequently, between August and October 2023, the Can Poeti-Simon's Mill 2024-2028 Management Plan is being drafted to specify the desired stewardship model and define the specific actions and objectives.
