Alongside the stewardship collaboration between Can Poeti and the CST, Mireia Jiménez, who is also a member of the Centre, is pursuing a PhD on river governance and stewardship, focusing on the case study of the Brugent River basin (in the regions of La Garrotxa and La Selva) and, consequently, its passage through the Can Poeti estate. This effort aims to strengthen ties with the scientific community through action-oriented research.

The main objective of the thesis is to determine how models of co-governance applicable to Mediterranean river basins can be improved to more effectively and equitably address the challenges posed by the global environmental crisis

Specific objectives:

  1. To diagnose the current state of co-governance of river spaces in Mediterranean basins.

  2. To provide a practical case study in the Catalan context through the Brugent River basin, analyzing the best co-governance model for this river basin.

  3. Based on the insights from the first objective, apply them to the chosen case study to formulate improvement proposals for governance that could be useful not only for the case study but also for extending to other similar river basins.

Among the planned actions, the following stand out:

  • A hydrogeological characterization of the Brugent River basin.

  • Analysis of continental aquatic ecosystems and identification of their services.

  • Creation of a stakeholder map to understand the social composition of the area.

  • Describe the practical case study from a network/hydrosocial space perspective: incorporating the hydrographic basin (the natural biophysical space of water flows) along with the socioeconomic, political, and cultural processes that influence and shape specific forms of water control and use.

  • Describe and analyze the current management model and study and define an optimal governance model.

  • Determine the aspects to improve in governance models applicable to Mediterranean hydrogeological basins.
